Leadership: First Steps is a training course designed to enable, empower and equip potential new leaders to begin to lead themselves and others. The course runs alongside volunteering/work so that potential leaders can practically apply their learning.

Kingfisher Treasure Seekers was commissioned by Gloucestershire County Council to develop this course for adults with learning disabilities who have leadership potential in order to equip them to be effective peer leaders.

The course sessions cover:

  1. What is a leader
  2. Setting personal boundaries
  3. Communication
  4. Strengths and challenges
  5. Coping with change
  6. Solving problems
  7. Conflict resolution
  8. Effective advocacy

We also run 'train the trainer' sessions so that organisations are equipped to develop a leadership culture within their organisations.

Although this course was initially commissioned for adults with learning disabilities we have used the materials with people from lots of different groups who have all found it extremely useful.

The course has been developed and is run by our training team, led by Gill Parkinson
