It is great to see two new trainees getting established on the programme, and a third getting started this month. Two of our new trainees have been eager to get on and work five days a week with us, and are keen to start setting goals to work on. Sometimes, however, it  takes a while for a new trainee to get established into a pattern of meeting with us regularly, particularly if they have a complicated home situation. As a team we do our best to accommodate the needs of each individual trainee, while still keeping within the parameters of our normal work hours, so this can get quite challenging. So far, it seems that our new trainees are really wanting to prioritise their Anchor training and want to make an effort to meet with us. It is good to establish what goals trainees want to work on early in the programme and it helps to identify some “quick wins” at this stage, especially when some of their other goals may take quite some time. If they can recognise some positive progress early on, it helps keep them motivated if things feel tougher later on in the programme.

One of our trainees was a keen animal lover and outdoor person before she was incapacitated by various mental health problems. This month the trainers have helped her to link up with the City Farm so that she can volunteer there once a week. It was amazing to see her come to life as she got stuck into working with the animals, using her expertise. It reminded her of her strengths, especially as City Farm staff were keen to invite her back regularly, and there was an added bonus as she slept really well afterwards, which for an insomniac was a big win!
